זְאֵב (with Tsere impure) m.

(1)  a wolf, because it frightens the flock (unless the verb be a denominative). [“So called from its tawny and yellow colour.” Thes] Arab. ذِيءْبُ, Syr. ܕܺܐܒܐܳ. Genesis 49:27; Isaiah 11:6, 65:25 Jeremiah 5:6, זְאֵבֵי עֶרֶב “evening wolves,” those which go forth to prowl at evening. Habakkuk 1:8; Zephaniah 3:3, comp. λύκοι νυκτερινοί, Oppian. Cyneget. iii. 206, νυκτιπόροι ibid. i. 440.

(2) [Zeeb], pr.n. of a Midianite prince, Judges 7:25, 8:3 Psalms 83:12.
