Note. — דָּ֫נָה יַעַן 2 Samuel 24:6. As no such place is known, the text is usually regarded as corrupt, and, ᵐ5 being uncertain, is variously changed: (1) דָּ֫נָה יַעַר to Dan in the wood, Thes after ᵑ9 silvestria. (2) (וַיָּסֹבּוּ) דָּ֫נָה וְעִיּוֺן to Dan and Ijon Klo (compare 1 Kings 15:20). (3) (סָֽבֲבוּ) דָּן וּמִדָּן We Dr compare ᵐ5.
דָּן (“judge”), [Dan], pr. name
(1) of a son of Jacob, and of the tribe bearing his name; the boundaries of whose land are described, -Josh. 19:4048. [Whence the Gentile noun דָּנִי Judges 13:2 ].
(2) of a town on the northern limit of Palestine (otherwise called לַיִשׁ), Joshua 19:47; Judges 18:29, which took its name from a colony of the Danites. In the words דָּנָה יַעַן 2 Samuel 24:6, there appears to be a transcriptural error, and we should probably read יַעַד. Vulg. silvestria.
