[דָּגַל] verb denominative carry, or set up standard, banner —
Qal Imperfect 1 plural נִדְנֹּל Psalm 20:6 (Gr Che נָגִיל; Bi נְגַדֵּל, after ᵐ5ᵑ6; Now נִגְדַּל; possibly נַגְדִּל ?) set up standard in battle, compare Dl Proverbs 61.
Niph`al Participle feminine plural נִדְגָּלוֺת Song of Solomon 6:4,10 bannered, supplied with standards, participle as substantive, of bannered hosts, compare De.
דגן (√ of following meaning dubious; Late Hebrew דַּגֵּן Pa`el heap up etc. seems to be denominative; Ol§ 215b. 4 derives דָּגָן from דָּגָה, compare MV; We Skizzen iii. 170 inclines to regard דָּגָן as derived from proper name, of divinity דגן (compare דָּגוֺן), as cereal from Ceres).
דָּגַל i.q. Arab. دجل to cover, to cover over (see the kindred roots under דָּגָה ), whence also to act covertly, to deceive (compare בָּגַד). Hence דֶּגֶל a flag, a standard, like the Germ. Fahne from πῆνος, pannus. The idea of shining, being bright, which I formerly ascribed to this root with Nanninga (Diss. Lugd. ii. 916), and Muntingh (On Psalms 20:6), seems to me hardly able to be proved. From the noun דֶּגֶל there is again formed the denom. verb דָּגַל to set up banners. Psalms 20:6, בְּשֵׁם אֱלֹהֵינוּ נִדְגֹּל “in the name of our God we will set up our banners;” compare the expressions הִזְכִּיר בְּשֵׁם יְיָ, קָרָא בְּשֵׁם יְיָ. LXX. μεγαλυνθησόμεθα, reading or else conjecturing נגדל. Muntingh (see above), through that etymological conjecture, we will glory, we will exult. Part. pass דָּגוּל erect as a banner, conspicuous, distinguished; used of a young man, Song of Solomon 5:10.
Niphal, to be furnished or arrayed with banners. Song of Solomon 6:4, 10, אֲיֻמָּה כַּנִּדְגָּלוֹת “terrible as furnished with banners,” i.e. as hosts or a camp of soldiers. Symm. ὠς τάγματα παρενβολῶν. The virgin is here described as conquering and captivating the hearts of all. Comp. a similar image taken from an army (Song of Solomon 6:2, ), and the same figure as being of frequent use in the Arabian Poets.
