בָּשָׁן (“soft,” “sandy soil”), often with the art. הַבָּשָׁן pr.n. Bashan, the northern part of the region beyond Jordan; bounded on the north by the mountains of Hermon, 1 Chronicles 5:23 (whence “the hill of Bashan,” Psalms 68:16, is a name of Hermon), and on the south by Jabbok and Mount Gilead; on the east extending to Salchah (Deuteronomy 3:10, 13 Joshua 12:4). It was taken from Og an Amorite king, by the Israelites, and was given with part of Gilead to the half tribe of Manasseh (Numbers 21:33, 32:33 ), it was celebrated for its oaks (Isaiah 2:13; Ezekiel 27:6; Zechariah 11:2) and for its rich pastures and abundance of cattle (Deuteronomy 32:14; Psalms 22:13; Amos 4:1; Ezekiel 39:18). Arab. البثنية Ch. מַתְנָן, בּוּתְנָן, Syr. ܡܰܬܢܚܺܢ, Gr. in Josephus and Ptolem. Βαταναία, now البثنية el-Bethenyeh.
