בָּרֹד pl. בְּרֻדִּים adj. sprinkled with spots, especially white ones; spotty, used of goats, Genesis 31:10, 12 Genesis 31:12 of horses, Zechariah 6:3, Zechariah 6:6. So Lat. “sparsas albo pelles dixit,” Virg. Eccl. ii. 41. It differs from נָקֹד, to which it is joined, Gen. loc. cit., which denotes lesser spots. (Arab. بُرْدُ and بُرْدَةُ a variegated garment, particoloured, as if sprinkled with hail; transp. ربد Conj. II. to be spotted, fcheckig fehn, of a sheep. Syr. ܒܰܪܕܘܽܢܐܳ a leopard, so called from its spots; nor can it be doubted but that also Greek and Latin, πάρδος, pardus, have sprung from this stock. From the Arabic word just cited is the French broder.
