Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בֶּצֶר m.

(1)  ore of gold and silver (Gold= und Silber= Grz), the metal in a rude state, as it is dug out from mines, or cut out; so called from cutting or breaking (Ps. 76:13 ), like the Arab. تِبْرُ native gold or silver before it has been wrought by fire or the hammer, قِبْرَةُ n. unit. a particle of such gold, from تبر i.q. שָׁבַר II. to break, VIII. to be cut off, broken off. Comp. Germ. brechen, the word used by workers of metals of digging them. Job 22:24, שִׁית עַל־עָפָר בֶּצֶר “lay precious metals on the dust.” In the other hemist. gold of Ophir. Pl. verse 25 Job 22:25, וְהָיָה שַׁדַּי בְּצָרֶיךָ “and the Almighty shall be to thee as precious metals;” in the other hemist. כֶּסֶף תּוֹעָפוֹת. Also בְּצַר in pause בְּצָר Job 36:19, which has the same meaning. I have defended this excellent explanation of this obscure word out of Abulwalid more at length in Thes. p. 230, where see. Winer regards it to be a particle of native gold or silver, called from being cut off; compare تِبْرَةُ a particle of gold. But this learned man appears to have overlooked that the notion of particle does not spring from the root, but from تِبْرَةُ being a noun of unity. So from ذَهَبُ gold is ذَهَبَةُ a particle and piece of gold, from تِبْنُ straw, تِبْنَةُ a piece of straw; however these feminine forms do not always signify a part or particle.

(2) [Bezer], pr.n.

(a) of a Levitical town in the tribe of Reuben, which was one of the cities of refuge, Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:8, 21:36. Vulg. Bosor.

(b) m. 1 Chronicles 7:37.
