Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אִגֶּרֶת , f. pl. אִגְּרוֹת a word of the later Hebrew, an epistle, especially used of the royal epistles and edicts, or those written by public authority, and sent by a public courier (ἄγγαρος) to any one, 2 Chronicles 30:1. This word appears to me to be from the unused word אִגֵּר, which denoted one hired, specially a courier (see the root אָגַר ), and which was also adopted in Greek under the form ἄγγαρος; see Schleusneri Lex. in N.T.h.v., -Neh. 2:79 ; 6:5, 17, 19 Esther 9:26, 29. Lorsbach (Stäudlins Beytr. v. p. 20) regards this word as coming from the Persic; comparing the modern Pers. انكاريدن engariden, to paint, to write; whence انكاره engâre, anything whatever written.
