Vocabulary of the Greek NT

In OGIS 583.8 (i/A.D.) a certain Adrastus is praised as δωρεὰν καὶ αὐθαίρετος γυμνασίαρχος , i.e. he had provided oil at his own expense for the combatants, and exercised the office voluntarily (see the editor’s note) : cf. also the late P Par 21.15 (A.D. 616) αὐθαιρέτῳ βουλήσει καὶ ἀδόλῳ συνειδήσει . For the adverb see Magn 163.15 ff. πᾶσάν τε λειτουργίαν . . . τελέσαντος τῇ πατρίδι αὐθαιρέτως , and the common technical phrase ἑκουσίως καὶ αὐθαιρέτως , as P Lond 280.7 (A.D. 55) (= II. p. 193), BGU II. 581.6 (A.D. 133), P Lips I. 17.9 (A.D. 377), P Giss I. 56.3 (vi/A.D.), al. : the phrase may also be expressed adjectivally, as with γνώμῃ in P Oxy X. 1280.5 (iv/A.D.).
