σύζυγος (L T Tr WH συνζυγος (cf. σύν, II. at the end)), συζυγον, (συζεύγνυμι), yoked together; used by Greek writers (from Aeschylus down) of those united by the bond of marriage, relationship, office, labor, study, business, or the like; hence, a yoke-fellow, consort, comrade, colleague, partner. Accordingly, in Philippians 4:3 most interpreters hold that by the words γνήσιε σύζυγε Paul addresses some particular associate in labor for the gospel. But as the word is found in the midst of (three) proper names, other expositors more correctly take it also as a proper name ((WH marginal reading Συνζυγε); see Laurent, Ueber Synzygos in the Zeitschr. f. d. Luther. Theol. u. Kirche for 1865, p. 1ff (reprinted in his Neutest. Studien, p. 134f)); and Paul, alluding (as in Philemon 1:11) to the meaning of the word as an appellative, speaks of him as 'a genuine Synzygus', i. e. a colleague in fact as well as in name. Cf. ";come together,"; ";assemble"; : P Oxy IX. 1187.6 (A.D. 254) συνελθε [ῖ ]ν σήμερον ἐν τῷ συνήθει τόπῳ, ";to assemble to-day at the accustomed place"; (Ed.) : cf. Mark 3:20, al. The verb is common in connexion with marriage, as in Matthew 1:18, e.g. BGU IV. 1050.6 (time of Augustus) συγχωροῦσιν Ἰσιδώρα καὶ Διονύσιος συνεληλυθέναι ἀλλήλοις πρὸς γάμο (ν), so ib. 1098.8 (c. B.C. 20), 1105.8 (c. B.C. 10), P Tebt II. 351.2 (ii/A.D.) οἰκί (ας) . . δοθείσης αὐτῇ. . . συνερχο (μένῃ) τῷ ὁμομητ (ρίῳ) ἀδελ (φῷ), ";a house given to her on her marriage with her brother on the mother’s side,"; ib. 334.4 (A.D. 200–1) σ [υ ]νῆλθον πρὸς γάμον Ἑρμῇ, ";I was united in marriage to Hermes"; (Edd.) : cf. also Gnomon 47 (= BGU V. p. 23) (c. A.D. 150) ἀστὴ συνελθοῦσα Α ̣ι ̣̔̓[γ ]υ ̣[πτίῳ ] κ ̣ατ᾽ ἄγνοιαν ὡς ἀστῷ ἀνεύθυνός ἐστιν, and the use of the subst. συνέλευσις in PSI V. 450.10 (ii/iii A.D.), with which the editor compares P Oxy XII. 1473.6 (A.D. 201) ἅμα τῇ τοῦ γάμ [ο ]υ αὐτῶν προσελεύσει.
