1. to join together fitly, compound, combine (Epicharm. in Plutarch, mor., p. 110 a.; Plato, Aristotle, others): πνευματικός πνευματικά, 1 Corinthians 2:13 (for Paul, in delivering the things disclosed to him by the Holy Spirit in speech derived not from rhetorical instruction but received from the same divine Spirit, 'combines spiritual things with spiritual', adapts the discourse to the subject; other interpretations are refuted by Meyer ad loc.; πνευματικός is neuter; (but others would take it as masculine and give συγκίνειν the meaning to interpret (R. V. margin interpreting spiritual things to spiritual men); cf. the Sept. Genesis 40:8, 16, 22; Genesis 41:12, 15; Judges 7:15; Daniel 5:12, etc.; see Heinrici in Meyer 6te Aufl.)).

συνείδησις —
(I) lit. ";co-knowledge,"; hence ";consciousness"; : P Par p. 422.7 (ii/A.D.) ὅ ]ταν ἰσελθῇς, καλῇ ὥρᾳ, εὑρήσις συνίδησιν, ";lorsque tu seras entré, à la bonne heure, tu trouveras les gens au courant de la chose(?)"; (Ed.), P Ryl II. 116.9 (A.D. 194) θλειβομένη τῇ συνειδήσει περὶ ὧν ἐνοσφίσατο ἔν τε ἐνδομενείᾳ καὶ ἀποθέτοις, ";oppressed by the consciousness of what she had appropriated both of the furniture and stored articles"; (Edd.), P Flor III. 338.17 (iii/A.D.) οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι συνειδήσι (";coscenziosamente,"; Ed.) σπουδάζεις ἐμοί, P Oxy I, 123.13 (iii/iv A.D.) ἤδη γὰρ οἱ τῶν ἄλλων πόλεων συνείδησιν εἰσήνεγκαν τοῖς κολλήγαις αὐτῶν, εἰσῆλθαν, ";already the notaries of the other towns have acquainted their colleagues, and they have come in"; (Edd.), BGU IV. 1024iii. 7 (iv/A.D. τ ̣ὴν συνείδησιν τ ̣[ῶν πεπραγμένων (?) . . ., and P Par 21.15 (A.D. 616) ὁμολογοῦμεν γνώμῃ ἑκουσίᾳ καὶ αὐθαιρέτῳ βουλήσει καὶ ἀδόλῳ συνειδήσει. (2) The deeper sense of ";conscience,"; which the word has in the Pauline writings, is often traced to the influence of popular Greek philosophy : ";it is one of the few technical terms in St. Paul which seem to have Greek rather than Jewish affinities,"; say SH ad Romans 2:15. But it should be noted that the word does not occur in Epictetus (Fragm. 97, Schweighäuser, is now pronounced non-genuine), nor in M. Antoninus (see Bonhöffer Epiktet. p. 156 f.). The word would seem, therefore, to have been ";baptized"; by Paul into a new and deeper connotation, and to have been used by him as equivalent to τὸ συνειδός, for which we may quote three exx. from our sources—P Oxy III, 532.23 (ii/A.D.) ὑπὸ κακοῦ συνειδότος κατεχόμενος, ";being oppressed by an evil conscience"; (cf. Sap 17:11), P Reinach 52.5 (iii/iv A.D.) ὑμεῖς δὲ ἠμελήσατε ἴσως οὐ καλῷ συνειδότι χρώμενοι, and OGIS 484.37 (ii/A.D.) τοὺς οὖν δ ̄ιὰ τὸ συνειδὸς ὀμνύναι μή δυναμένους διδόναι τι αὐτοῖς.
Συνείδησις occurs in Menander Monost, 597 ἁπᾶσιν ἡμῖν ἡ συνείδησις θεός : cf. ib. 654; and for the compd. εὐσυνείδητος, as in M, Anton, vi. 30, cf. Preisigke 4426.12 (c. A.D. 274) εὐσυνείδητον πρᾶγμα ποιῶν.
On συνείδησις see further Norden Agnostos Theos p. 136, n..1, Böhlig Geisteskultur vom Tarsus, p. 122 ff., and Bonhöffer Epiktet. p.156f.
σύνοιδα / συνεῖδον —
σύνοιδα, perf. used as a present, ";share my knowledge with,"; ";am privy to"; : cf. Acts 5:2, 1 Corinthians 4:4, and see such passages as BGU IV. 1141.50 (B.C. 14) χειρογραφῆσαί σε δεῖ περὶ τοῦ μὴ συνειδέναι τούτοις τὸν Ξύστον, ";you must state in writing that Xystus knew nothing of these things,"; P Oxy II. 240.5 (A.D. 37) μὴ συνε ]ιδέναι με μηδενὶ διασεσεισμέ [νωι, ";that I know of no one from whom extortions have been made,"; ib. VI. 898.20 (A.D. 123) συνειδυῖα ἑαυτῆι ̣ πολλὰ τῶν ἐμῶν ἀνηρπακυίηι, ";being conscious of the theft of much of my property,"; Chrest. II. 88 iv. 9 (c. A.D. 141) οἱ ἐπίτροποι συνειδότες ὡς ἀνόνητος αὐτοῖς ἐστὶν ἡ λογοθεσία, and Syll 567 (= .3 983).7 (ii/A.D.) μηδὲν αὑτοῖς δεινὸν συνειδότας —a condition of purity. See also s.v. συνείδησις above.
