= Lat. speculator, prop. scout: but in the Roman Imperial army,

1 one of the principales or head-quarters' staff of a legionary commander or provincial governor (whose duties included the carrying out of executions), Ev.Mark 6:27, POxy. 1193.1 (iv A.D.), etc.

2. one of the Imperial body-guard ( speculatores Augusti ),= δορυφόρος, Suid.

σπεκουλάτωρ, σπεκουλατορος (R G σπεκουλατορος (cf. Tdf. on Mark as below)), (the Latin wordspeculator), a looker-out, spy, scout; under the emperors an attendant and member of the body-guard, employed as messengers, watchers, and executioners (Seneca, de ira 1, 16centurio supplicio praepositus codere gladium speculatorem jubet; also de benef. 3, 25); the name is transferred to an attendant of Herod Antipas that acted as executioner: Mark 6:27. συνκλείω is used literally, as in Luke 5:6, in the sense of ";shut together,"; ";enclose,"; in such passages as P Fay 12.17 (c. B.C. 103) συνκλείσ ̣[αν ]τ [ ]ς με εἰς τὴν. . οἰκίαν, Preisigke 5280.11 (A.D. 158) Τούρβων. . κατασχών με εἰσήγαγ [ε ]ν ἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν καὶ συνέκλεισέν με, P Fay 135.7 (iv/A.D.) συνκλισθῇς ἄχρις ἄχρις ἂν πληρώσῃς, ";you will be put in prison until you pay"; (Edd.), and P Lond 237.9 (c. A.D. 346) (= II. p. 293) εἰς τὰ κάστρα τὰς ἀν [ν ]ώνας οὐ συνέκλι (= ει)σιν, ";did not lock up the corn in the granaries.";

For the verb with reference to time cf. Syll 326.18 (c. B.C. 107) τοῦ καιροῦ συγκλείοντος εἰς χειμῶνα (for constr. cf. Romans 11:32). The subst. occurs in P Oxy II. 275.20 (A.D. 66) (= Selections, p. 56) ἐπὶ συνκλεισμῷ τοῦ ὅλου χρόνου, and P Flor I. 50.114 (A.D. 268) μέχρι ̣ συνκλεισμοῦ τοῦ διελθόντος α ̄ (ἔτους).
