Vocabulary of the Greek NT

a Greek name used as a substitute for Συμεών (q.v.) owing to similarity of sound (cf. Deissmann BS, p. 315). The name is common in the papyri and need not necessarily refer to Jews, cf. P Lille I. 5.39 (B.C. 260–259), P Fay 14.1 (B.C. 124), P Tebt I. 43.15 (B.C. 118), BGU IV. 1129.3 (B.C. 13), P Lond 1177.220 (A.D. 113) (= III. p. 187), and BGU III. 913.7 (A.D. 206).
