HG 2.3.1 (interpol.); τοῖς προγόνοις -αζομένοις ἀπομνημονεύεταιὁπόστος ἀφ' Ἡρακλέους ἐγένετο his descent.. is traced by naming his ancestors, Id. Ages. 1.2.

Heracl. 87 (lyr.): rarely in Med., παῖδά μ' ὠνομάζετο called me his son, S. OT 1021: Pass., ὄνομα δ' ὠνομάζετο Ἕλενος Id. Ph. 605; τὴν αὑτῆς ἐπωνυμίαν ὀνομαζόμενον Pl. Phdr. 238a; ἀντὶ γὰρ φίλων καὶ ξένων, ἃ τότ' ὠνομάζοντο D. 18.46. nominate, ὀνομασθεὶς εἰς δεκαπρωτείαν POxy. 1257.1, cf. 1204.4 (iii A.D.).

2. εἶναι is freq. added pleon., τὰς ὀνομάζουσι εἶναι Ὑπερόχην καὶ.. whose names they say are Hyperoche and.., Hdt. 4.33; σοφιστὴν ὀνομάζουσιν τὸν ἄνδρα εἶναι Pl. Prt. 311e, cf. R. 428e (Pass.), X. Revelation 13:1-18, etc.; cf. καλέω 11.3 b.

Tr. 1105. utter names or words, ἐς τρὶς ὀνομάσαι Σόλων Hdt. 1.86; μάλα σεμνῶς ὀνομάζων D. 18.35, cf. 122, 21.158: Pass., φύσις ἐπὶ τοῖς ὀνομάζεται ἀνθρώποισι the name φύσις is given by men to those things, Emp. 8.4, cf. Parm. 9.1; παρανομίαν ἐπὶ τοῖς μὴ ἀνάγκῃ κακοῖς ὀνομασθῆναι the name of transgression is applied.., Th. 4.98; ἀπὸ τούτου τοῦτο ὀνομάζεται (sc. οὐ φροντὶς Ἱπποκλείδῃ) hence this saying is used, Hdt. 6.130. make famous, in Pass., οἱ ὠνομασμένοι persons of renown, v.l. for διωνομασμένοι in Isoc. 20.19. a. τό ὄνομα, to name i. e. to utter: passive Ephesians 1:21; τοῦ κυρίου (Rec. Χριστοῦ), the name of the Lord (Christ) namely, as his Lord, 2 Timothy 2:19 (the Sept. for יְהוָה שֵׁם הִזְכִּיר, to make mention of the name of Jehovah in praise, said of his worshippers, Isaiah 26:13; Amos 6:10); τό ὄνομα Ἰησοῦ ἐπί τινα, Acts 19:13, see ἐπί, C. I. 1 c., p. 234{b} middle b. τινα, with a proper or an appellative name as predicate accusative, to name, i. e. give name to, one: Luke 6:13f; passive to be named, i. e. bear the name of, 1 Corinthians 5:11; ἐκ with the genitive of the one from whom the received name is derived, Ephesians 3:15 (Homer Iliad 10, 68; Xenophon, mem. 4, 5, 12).

c. τινα or τί, to utter the name of a person or thing: ὅπου ὠνομάσθη Χριστός, of the lands into which the knowledge of Christ has been carried, Romans 15:20 (1 Macc. 3:9); ὀνομάζεσθαι of things which are called by their own name because they are present or exist (as opposed to those which are unheard of), 1 Corinthians 5:1 Rec.; Ephesians 5:3.
