Vocabulary of the Greek NT
With the use of this verb in John 11:39 (cf. Exodus 8:14) cf. PSI IV. 297.3 (V/A.D. ?) δριμὺ ὀ ̣[σ ]δομένου τοῦ σώματος, ";the body emitting a pungent odour"; : for the form ὀσδομένου see the editor’s introduction. When word was brought to Athens of the death of Alexander, Demades denied the report, since, had it been true, the whole earth would long ago have been filled with the stench of the body—πάλαι γὰρ ἂν ὅλην ὄζειν νεκροῦ τὴν οἰκουμένην (Plut. Phoc. 22).
