Dor., Ion. μικκός (q.v.): σμικρός is corroborated by metre in Il. 17.757, Hes. Op. 361, and might be restored in Il. 5.801, Od. 3.296 (μικρός codd.); it is prob. the only form in Hdt. (μικρός Hdt. 2.74 codd.): freq. in Lyr. and prob. always in Trag. (exc. where metre requires μικρός, as S. Aj. 161 (anap., Comp.)); most freq. in Pl.; but in Th., also Ar. and other Com., μικρός prevails, σμικρός being found Th. 4.13, 7.75, 8.81, Ar. Ach. 523, V. 5; Att. Inscrr. have σμικρός IG 12.313.111, al., μικρός ib.369.10, al.: —

μικρός, μικρά, μικρόν, comparitive μικρότερος, μικροτερα, ἐρον (from Homer down), the Sept. for קָטֹן, קָטָן, מְעַט, small, little; used a. of size: Matthew 13:32; Mark 4:31; hence, of stature, τῇ ἡλικία, Luke 19:3; of length, James 3:5.
b. of space: neuter προελθών (προσελθών, T Tr WH marginal reading in Matthew, Tr WH marginal reading in Mark (see προσέρχομαι, a.)) μικρόν, having gone forward a little, Matthew 26:39; Mark 14:35 (cf. Winers Grammar, § 32,6; Buttmann, § 131, 11f).

Among the numerous passages that might be quoted showing how universally in the ancient world a dead body was regarded as unclean, we may mention P Tor I. 1ii. 22 (B.C. 116), where it is said of Hera and Demeter—αἷς ἀθέμιτά ἐστιν νεκρὰ σώματα, ";quae abhorrent a cadaveribus"; (Ed.). Other exx. of the word in this general sense are P Fay 103.1 (iii/A.D.) λ [όγος ] ἀναλώματος τοῦ νεκροῦ, ";account of expenses for the corpse,"; P Oxy I. 51.8 A.D. 173) the report of a public physician who had been appointed—ἐφιδεῖν σῶμα νεκρὸν ἀπηρτημένον Ἱέρακος, ";to inspect the body of a man who had been found hanged, named Hierax"; (Edd.) (cf. ib. III. 475.6—A.D. 182), P Grenf II. 77.13 (iii/iv A.D.) ( = Selections, p. 120), where two men are charged with leaving their brother’s body, while carrying off his effects—καὶ ἐκ τούτου ἔμαθον ὅτι οὐ χάριν τοῦ νεκροῦ ἀνήλθατε ἀλλὰ χάριν τῶν σκευῶν αὐτοῦ, ";and from this I learned that it was not on account of the dead man you came here, but on account of his goods,"; and from the inscrr. Syll 438.145 (c. B.C. 400) τὸν δὲ νεκρὸν κεκαλυμμένον φερέτω σιγᾶι. In JHS xix. p. 92, a sepulchral inscr. of ii/A.D., we have χαῖρέ μοι μῆτερ γλυκυτάτη καὶ φροντίζετε ἡμῶν ὅσα ἐν νεκροῖς —the correlative of the NT ἐκ νεκρῶν. [Note the alternation of sing. and plur. where the reference is identical (cf. Milligan Thess. p. 131 f.).] With the use of νεκρός in Luke 15:24; Luke 15:32, Revelation 1:18; Revelation 2:8; Revelation 3:1, cf. BGU IV. 1024vii. 26 (iv/v A.D.) ε ̣̓λ ̣έησα τὴν δυσδ [αίμον ]α, ὅτι ζῶσ ̣α ̣ [π ]ροσεφέρετο τοῖς βου [λομένοις ] ὡς νεκρά. In C. and B. ii. 343.1 ff. ( = p. 477) a certain Menogenes Eustathes expresses his views on life in the spirit of Epicurean philosophy—
τὸ ζῆν ὁ ζήσας καὶ θανὼν ζῇ τοῖς φίλοις ·
ὁ κτώμενος δὲ πολλὰ μὴ τρυφῶν σὺν τοῖς φίλοις,
οὗτος τέθνηκε πε [ρι ]πατῶν καὶ ζῇ νεκ [ροῦ βίον ?
";The Christian spirit which objected to free enjoyment of life for self and friends is stigmatized as ‘death in life’"; (Ed.). Cf. also Soph. Philoct. 1018 ἄφιλον ἔρημον ἄπολιν ἐν ζῶσιν νεκρόν. Νεκρός is virtually = θνητός in Epict. i. 3. 3, ii. 19. 27 (cited by Sharp, p. 54).

P Par 22.16 (B.C. 165) τῶν δὲ ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ. . . παρακομισάντων αὐτὸν εἰς τὰς κατὰ Μέμφιν νεκρίας, μεχρὶ τοῦ νῦν οὐ τετόλμηκεν αὐτὸν ἡ Νέφορις θάψαι, P Tor I. 1i. 20 (B.C. 116) see note on p. 85, and Preisigke 5216.5 (i/B.C.), and for νεκροτάφος, ";gravedigger,"; cf.
