The thought of merrymaking at a feast, as in Luke 16:19 (cf. Field Notes, p. 69 f.), comes out in a ii/A.D. letter from the Fayûm, where the writer asks—χρῆσόν μοι ὀνάριον ὑπὸ τρίχωρο (ν) οἴνου καὶ τὸ ἀντίφορτον, ἵνα σχῶμεν αὐτὸ εἰς τὰ Σουχεῖα (the festival of Souchos, a Fayûm deity), ἵνα καὶ ἐν τούτωι διὰ σὲ δόξωμεν εὐφραίνεσθαι (BGU I. 248.28). In BGU IV. 1080.7 (iii/A.D.) (= Chrest. I. p. 564) a father, congratulating his son on his marriage, writes—καὶ ἡμεῖς δὲ ἀκοῇ ἀπόντες ὡς παρόντες διαθέσι ηὐφράνθημεν κατευχόμενοι ἐπὶ τοῖς μέλλουσι. From the inscrr. we may cite OGIS 504.10 (A.D. 128–9) καὶ εὐφρᾶναι ὑμᾶς ἐνδειξάμενοι ἣν πρὸς αὐτὸν εὔνοιαν ἔχομεν, and C. and B. ii. p. 386, No. 232.19 (time of Caracalla or Alex. Severus) σπεύδετε, τὴν ψυχὴν εὐφραίνετε πάντοτε, [θ ]νη [τοί —a Jew speaks. See also Kaibel 920 ii. 6 (time of Severus) εὐφραίνεσθαι (l.—εσθε), φίλοι, εἰς λαβύρινθον ἀεί.
