ἔγ-κλημα, ατος, τό, (ἐγκαλέω)

I accusation, charge, ἔ. τινι ἔχειν S. Ph. 323, cf. Tr. 361, Antipho 3.2.9, etc.; ἐγκλήματα ἔχειν τινός, = ἐγκαλεῖν τι, Th. 1.26; ἔ. ποιεῖν τι make a thing matter of complaint, Id. 3.53; ἐγκλήματα ποιεῖσθαι bring accusations, Id. 1.126; τὰ ἐ. τὰ ἔς τινας complaints respecting.., ib. 79; ἐν ἐγκλήματι γίγνεσθαι D. 18.251; γίγνεται or ἐστὶ ἔγκλημά μοι πρός τινα I have ground of complaint respecting him, X. Cyr. 1.2.6, Lys. 10.23; λύειν ἔ. clear away a charge, Plb. 2.52.4; λόγοις τὰ ἐ. διαλύεσθαι Th. 1.140.

II in Law, written complaint: generally, of complaints which were to lead to private suits, ἔ. λαγχάνειν τινί file a complaint against.., D. 34.16, al., cf. PTeb. 616 (ii A. D.).

III concrete, a standing reproach, τῆς τύχης καὶ τῶν θεῶν Plu Dio 58.

ἔγκλημα (see ἐν, III. 3), ἐγκλήματος, τό (ἐγκαλέω), accusation: the crime of which one is accused, Acts 25:16; ἔγκλημα ἔχειν, to have laid to one's charge, be accused of a crime, Acts 23:29. (Often in Attic writings from Sophocles and Thucydides on.) [SYNONYMS: see κατηγορέω; cf. Isocrates 16, 2 τάς μέν γάρ δίκας ὑπέρ τῶν ἰδίων ἐγκληματων λαγχανουσι, τάς δέ κατηγοριας ὑπέρ τῶν τῆς πόλεως πραγμάτων ποιοῦνται, καί πλείω χρόνον διατριβουσι τόν πατέρα μου διαβαλλοντες κτλ.]

P Tebt I. 5.8 (a royal decree—B.C. 118) proclaims an amnesty ἀγνοημάτων ἁμαρτημ [άτ ]ων [ ]ν ̣[κλημάτων ";for errors, crimes, accusations,"; (Edd.). Cf. also BGU IV. 1036.81 (A.D. 108) Τεσεᾶφις ἐπιδέδωκε τὸ ἔνκλημα καθὼς πρόκ (ειται), P Oxy II. 237vii. 16 (A.D. 186) ἐπὶ προφάσει ἑτέρων ἐνκλημάτων, ";on the pretence of counter-accusations,"; ib.viii. 20 οὐκ ἀπέχεται τὰ χρηματικὰ διὰ τούτων τῶν ἐνκλημάτων, P Ryl II. 116.1 (A.D. 194) ἀντίγραφον ἐγκλήματος Σ., ";copy of a complaint by S.";, P Tebt II. 616 (ii/A.D.) τῶν τεθέντων ἐνκλημάτων. For ἔγκλησις we may cite P Ryl II. 65.15 (B.C. 67?) τοὺς δὲ τ [ ]ν ̣ ἔγκλησιν πεποιημένους, ";those who brought the accusation"; (Edd.), and for ἔγκλητος P Tebt I. 27.4 (B.C. 113) πλὴ [ν ] ἴσθι μὲν ἔγκλητος ὑπάρχων, ";but be sure that you are liable to accusation"; (Edd.).
