P Magd 18.6 (B.C. 221) ἔχω [εἰς τὸ ] γῆρας τὰ ἀνάγκαια . P Lond 43.9 (ii/B.C.) (= I. p. 48) ἕξεις ἐφόδιον εἰς τὸ γῆρας , a mother’s optimistic assurance to her son who has just left school for a small post as teacher. P Flor III. 312.5 (A.D. 92) ἀπολυθῆναι τῶν λειτουργιῶν χχ (? such and such) διὰ γῆρας καὶ ἀσθένιαν . Ib. 382.36 (A.D. 222–3) πρὸ τοῦ γήρως , .65 ἡ διὰ τῆς σῆς φιλ ̣α [ν ]θρωπίας ἀνάπ ̣α ̣υσις τῷ γήρ ̣ᾳ δ ̣εομένη . (The old gen. may be also quoted from a rescript of Nero, OGIS 475.18 ἐπιμελεῖσθαι τοῦ σοῦ ] γήρως : so Genesis 44:20). From iv/A.D. we have P Thead 19.12 ἤδη εἰς γῆρας ἄκρον ἐληλυθηῖα , and P Oxy VI. 889.18, where a petitioner begs to be let off some municipal burden in view of γῆρας καὶ τὴν τοῦ σώ [ματος ἀσθένειαν . The compound γηροβοσκία occurs ib. .19, and in IX. 1210.5 (i/ii A.D.) ὲπιλελεγμένων ὑπὸ τῶν γονέων εἰς γηροβοσκίαν ἀφ᾽ ὧν ἔχουσι υἱῶν , ";men chosen by the parents from their sons to support them in old age"; (Ed.). For the compound εὐγηρία see OGIS 168.55 (B.C. 181–16) : the word is defined by Aristotle Rhet. I. 5. MGr has a derivative noun, γεράματα (plur.), with same meaning as γῆρας .
