מֶלֶךְ [so also in pause], with suff. מַלְכִּי, pl. מְלָכִים, once מְלָכִין Proverbs 31:3, and, by insertion of a mater lectionis א, מְלָאכִים 2 Samuel 11:1 [כתיב], m.
(1) a king. (Arab. مَلِكُ, مَالِكُ, rarely مَلْكُ Syr. ܡܰܠܟܳܐ.) Followed by a genit. of people or land, as מֶלֶךְ סְדֹם Genesis 14:2 מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה, מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל; but Jehovah’s king, Psalms 2:6, 18:51, is the king of Israel [Messiah] appointed by Jehovah.-The name of king is often applied
(a) to Jehovah, as being the king of Israel, and of individual Israelites, Psalms 5:3, 10:16 44:5 48:3 (in which passage he is called the great king); 68:25 74:12 84:4 Deuteronomy 33:5 or of the whole earth, Psalms 47:3, Psalms 47:8, compare מֶלֶךְ יַעֲקֹב Isaiah 41:21 מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל 44:6, of Jehovah.
(b) to idols, when those who worship them are the speakers, Isaiah 8:21; Amos 5:26; Zephaniah 1:5, compare βασιλεύς, II. γ́ 351; π́ 233. מֶלֶךְ מְלָכִים king of kings is a title of the king of Babylonia, Ezekiel 26:7 (see Ch.); הַמֶּלֶךְ הַגָּדוֹל the great king, a title of the king of Assyria, Isaiah 36:4 (compare βασιλεὺς ὁ μέγας, μέγας βασιλεύς, often in Aristophanes and Plato, of the king of Persia, and Syr. ܡܠܟܐ ܪܒܐ, in Barhebr. of the Roman emperor). Farther, kings are sometimes introduced as leaders of armies, Job 15:24, 18:14 30:15.
(2) [Melech], pr.n. m. 1 Chronicles 8:35, 9:41. Also with the art. הַמֶּלֶךְ Jeremiah 36:26, 38:6.
מֶלֶךְ emphat. מַלְכָּא, מַלְכָּה; pl. מַלְכִּין, and (in the Hebrew mode) מַלְכִּים Ezra 4:13, Ch. king. מֶלֶךְ מַלְכַּיָּא king of kings, of the king of Babylonia, Daniel 2:37 (compare Ezekiel 26:7); of Persia, Ezra 7:12, the latter of which is now called شا هنشاه Shahinshah, i.e. king of kings. The same title of honour was given to the kings of Egypt, the Moguls, the Parthians (see my Comment. on Isaiah 10:8), the Ethiopians (see Axum. Inscr. in Buttmann’s Museum für Alterthumswiss. vol. i.).- Daniel 7:17, in prophetic language מַלְכִּין kings, is put for kingdoms.
