Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בָּקָר comm. (m. Ex. 21:37 f. Job 1:14).

(1) bos, whether masc. or fem., bull or cow, so called from its ploughing (see the root No. 1), like armentum, according to Varro, De L.L. iv. 19, qs. aramentum, and Arab. بَقَرُ, according to Damiri, so called because it breaks up the ground with the plough (see Bochart, Hieroz. i. 280), [“or according to Ewald from the cloven hoofs”]. In pl. Amos 6:12; Nehemiah 10:37; 2 Chronicles 4:3. In all its other occurrences it denotes

(2) collect. oxen, cattle, herd (Arab. بَقَرُ id., with the noun of unity بَقَرَةُ one ox, Syr. ܒܰܘܪܐܳ herd, prop. used of oxen, but also used in a wider signification of other herds; compare בּוֹקֵר). צאֹן וּבָקָר herds and flocks (of sheep and goats), Genesis 12:16, 13:5 20:14. Deuteronomy 32:14, חֶמְאַת בָּקָר “milk of kine.” It is joined

(a) with numerals, and is opposed to שׁוֹר signifying one ox (compare שֶׂה and צאֹן). Ex. 21:37, “if any one steals one ox חֲמִשָּׁה בָקָר יְשַׁלֵּם … (שׁוֹר) תַּחַת הַשּׁוֹר he shall restore him five oxen for this one;” Numbers 7:3, שְׁנֵי עָשָׂר בָּקָר; verse 17, בָּקָר שְׁנַיִם

(b) with pl. verbs and adjectives, 2 Samuel 6:6, כִּי שָֽׁמְטוּ הַבָּקָר “for the oxen were restive;” 1 Kings 5:3, and these may be feminine if cows are intended; Job 1:14; Genesis 33:13 עֵגֶל בֶּן־בָּקָר a bull-calf, Leviticus 9:2 עֶגְלַת בָּקָר Isaiah 7:21, and simply בֶּן־בָּקָר Genesis 18:7, Genesis 18:8, of a calf; used of artificial oxen, 1 Kings 7:29. Hence the denom. בּוֹקֵר.
