a. properly, a rent: Matthew 9:16; Mark 2:21 (Aristotle, Theophrastus).

b. metaphorically, a division, dissension: John 7:43; John 9:16; John 10:19; 1 Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 11:18; 1 Corinthians 12:25 (ecclesiastical writings (Clement of Rome, 1 Cor. 2, 6 [ET], etc.; 'Teaching' 4, 3 [ET]; etc.)). (Cf. references under the word αἵρεσις, 5.)

For the meaning ";trade,"; ";profession,"; as in Acts 18:3, cf. PSI VII. 854.12 (B.C. 258–7) διδάξα ̣ι τὴν τέχνην, P Tebt II. 316.90 (A.D. 99) τ < >χνη (l. τέχνῃ) ἁλιεὺς ποτάμι <ο >ς, ";a river fisherman by trade,"; P Oxy X. 1263.14 (A.D. 128–9) χρήσασθαι τῇ τῶν ἐργ [ατῶν ] ποταμοῦ τέχ [νῃ, ";to practise the trade of a river worker"; (Edd.), ib. XIV. 1647.13 (contract of apprenticeship—late ii/A.D.) πρ [ ]ς μάθησιν τῆς γερδι [α ]κῆς τέχνης, ";to learn the trade of weaving,"; ib. I. 40.5 (ii/iii A.D.) ἰατρὸς ὑπάρχων τὴ [ν τέ ]χνην, ";being a doctor by profession,"; and ib. 83.4 (A.D. 327) ὀωπώλου τὴν τέχνην, ";an egg-seller by trade."; In ib. VII. 1029.26 (A.D. 107) certain hieroglyphic inscribers make a declaration μηδὲ ἔχει [ν ] μαθητὰς ἢ ἐπιξένους χρω íω ýμένους τῇ τέχνῃ εἰς τὴν ἐνεστῶσαν ἡμέραν, ";that we have no apprentices or strangers carrying on the art down to the present day"; (Ed.) : cf. Acts 17:29.

For the sense of ";artifice"; cf. P Oxy XII. 1468.5 (c. A.D. 258) τοῖς κακουργεῖν προχείρως ἔχουσιν τέχνῃ, ";to those who are ready to commit crimes by artifice"; : cf. Kaibel 38.2 (iv/A.D.) τέχνηι, οὐχὶ φύσει.
