Vocabulary of the Greek NT

πιστόω occurs in the pass. in the sense ";am assured of"; in 2 Timothy 3:14 : cf. 3 Maccabees 4:20 and the v.l. in 2 Thessalonians 1:10 (cf. WH Notes.2, p. 128). For the mid. see Syll.3 633.77 (c. A good ex. of the NT use of the verb is afforded by Aristeas 91 πεπεισμένος δὲ καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν τῶν ὑποδοχείων κατασκευὴν δηλώσω, καθὼς ἐπιστώθην, ";such is my belief as to the nature of the reservoirs, and I will explain how it was confirmed"; (Thackeray). We may note the late compd. πιστοφορέω (not in LS8) : P Lond IV. 1338.10 (A.D. 709) πιστοφορέθητι εἰς τοῦτο, ";be sure of that."; For the rare subst. πίστωμα, see Linde Epic. p. 16 f.
