Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בְּדָן [Bedan], pr. n.

(1) of an Israelitish judge not mentioned in the book of Judges, if the reading be correct, 1 Samuel 12:11, where probably we should with the LXX., Syriac (and Arabic) read בָּרָק Judges 4:9. Chald. renders it Samson, as if בְּדָן were i.q. בֶּן־דָּן Danite, see בִּדְקַר.

(2) m. 1 Chronicles 7:17. [In 1 Samuel 12:11, in Thes., Ges. regards בְּדָן as for אִבְצָן, by rejection of the prosthetic א, and interchange of צ and ד. However, “בְּדָן is doubtless i.q. עַבְדֹּן, Judges 12:13, 15 Judges 12:15, the ע being dropped as was often the case among the Phœnicians in the word עבד, e.g. בדאשמן for עבד אשמן; בדאשתר Bodostor, for עבד אשתי. See the author’s Monum. Phœnic. pp. 174, 175.” Ges. add.]
