תַּחַת
(1) subst. the lower part, that which is below. (Arab. تَحْتُ id., compare Eth. አትሐተ፡ to let down, to lower, ተትሕተ፡ to be lowered, depressed, ትሑት፡ low, ታሕተ፡ under. It may, however, be doubted whether ת final be primary and radical, or secondary, which latter opinion is supported by the Arab. تاخ to go down and dip (one’s finger); whence תַּחַת may be derived, like נַחַת, from נוּחַ.) Hence, in acc. adverb. below, beneath, Genesis 49:25; Deuteronomy 33:13 מִתַּחַת id. (comp. מִן No. 3, c), Exodus 20:4; Joshua 2:11. In constr. state (for which there is once תַּחַת לְ Song of Solomon 2:6), and with suff., commonly pl. 2 Samuel 22:37, 40 2 Samuel 22:40, 48 2 Samuel 22:48 (as to the form of which, see Hebr. Gramm. § 36, note). Prep. below, beneath, under (ὑπό), Arab. تَحْتَ. תַּחַת הַשָּׁמַיִם under heaven, Daniel 9:12 הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ תַּחַת under the sun (see שֶׁמֶשׁ ); תַּחַת הָהָר beneath the mountain, at the foot of the mountain, Exodus 24:4 תַּחַת הַלָּשׁוֹן under the tongue, Psalms 10:7, 66:17, and תַּחַת שְׂפָתַיִם under the lips, Psalms 140:4, i.e. in the mouth; תַּהַת יַד פּ׳ under the hand, i.e. in the power of any one, 1 Samuel 21:9. Of a woman it is said, she commits whoredom, adultery, under her husband, Numbers 5:19; Ezekiel 23:5, i.e. she commits whoredom who ought to obey the authority of her husband. But Habakkuk 3:16, may be rendered, תַּחְתַּי אֶרְגַּז “I tremble in my lower parts,” i.e. my knees and feet tremble.-With verbs of motion it is
(a) beneath, under any thing, 2 Samuel 22:37, 40 2 Samuel 22:40, 48 2 Samuel 22:48; Genesis 18:4; Judges 3:30.
(b) κατά, down, downwards, i.q. מַטָּה, Amos 2:13, אָנֹכִי מֵעִיק תַּחְתֵּיבֶם, prop. “I press you downwards;” Job 40:12.
With preff.
(α) מִתַּחַת adv. below, beneath (see above), prep. ὑπʼ ἐκ, unter (etwas) hervor, heraus, hinweg, from under, from beneath, used of those that were under anything, and come out from thence, Ezekiel 47:1, “waters came out מִתָּחַת הַמִּפְתָּן from under the threshold;” Proverbs 22:27, “why should they take away thy bed מִתַּחְתֶּיךָ from under thee?” i.e. on which thou liest; Exodus 6:6; Deuteronomy 7:24. Hence זָנָה מִתַּחַת פּ׳, see זָנָה. More rarely for מִתָּחַת לְ below, under (any thing), Job 26:5; Ezekiel 42:9. Another מִתַּחַת (out of a place), see No. 2.
(β) מִתַּחַת לְ (opp. to מֵעַל לְ), below, under any thing, as מִתַּחַת לָרָקִיעַ below the firmament, Genesis 1:7; Exodus 30:4 מִתַּחַת לְבֵית אֵל at the foot of Bethel (situated on a mountain), Genesis 35:5, compare 1 Samuel 7:11.
(γ) לְמִתַּחַת לְ i.q. preceding, after a verb of motion, 1 Kings 7:32.
(δ) אֶל תַּחַת under, sub, subter, with an acc. Jerem. 3:6 Zechariah 3:10, אֶל תָּחַת לְ Ezekiel 10:2 with an abl. 1 Samuel 21:4.
(2) what is under any one, the place in which any one stands, is constituted. Zechariah 6:12, יִצְמַח מִתַּחְתָּיו “from his place he shall grow up,” compare Exodus 10:23. Hence
(a) in acc. in a place, Exodus 16:29, שְׁבוּ אִישׁ תַּחְתָּיו “remain, every one in his own place;” Judges 7:21; 1 Samuel 14:9; 2 Samuel 2:23, 7:10 1 Chronicles 17:9; Job 36:16, רַחַב לֹא מוּצַק תַּחְתֶּיהָ a wide space, where (pr. in which place) there is no straitness.
(b) in the place of, for, instead of (anftatt), used of those who succeed into the place of another. Levit. 16:32 Esther 2:17 Psal. 45:17, תַּחַת אֲבוֹתֶיךָ יִהְיוּ בָנֶיךָ “in the stead of thy fathers shall be thy children.” Hence used of things which are interchanged, used of price (for) Genesis 30:15; 1 Samuel 2:20; 1 Kings 21:2, and after verbs of requiting, 1 Samuel 25:21. תַּחַת מֶה for what? why? Jeremiah 5:19.
With a relat. conj. תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר
(1) instead of that (anftatt daß), Deuteronomy 28:62.
(2) because that, i.e. because, Deuteronomy 21:14; 2 Kings 22:17. תַּחַת כִּי id. Deuteronomy 4:37. Also in the same sense תַּחַת followed by an inf. Isaiah 60:15, compare Job 34:26. תַּחַת רְשָׁעִים for the fuller תַּחַת הֱיוֹתָם רְשָׁעִים “because they are wicked.”
(3) [Thahath], (“station,” “place”), pr.n.
(a) of a station of the Israelites in the desert, Numbers 33:26.
(b) m.
(α) 1 Chronicles 6:9, 22 1 Chronicles 6:22.
(β) and γ) 1 Chronicles 7:20.
תַּחַת Chald. id. Daniel 4:11, מִן תַּחְתּוֹחִי i.q. Hebr. מִתַּחְתָּיו. The more usual form is תְּחוֹת.
