Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

תֹּגַרְמָה Genesis 10:3 and תּוֹגַרְמָה 1 Chronicles 1:6; Ezekiel 27:14, 38:6 [Togarmah], pr.n. of a northern nation and country sprung from Gomer (the Cimmerians), abounding in horses and mules. We should, apparently, understand Armenia, as very abundant in horses (ἱππόβοτος σφόδρα, Strab., xi. 13, § 9); at least a part of it. Such is either the tradition or the opinion of the Armenians themselves, who regard Torgom the son of Gomer (LXX. locc. citt. has the name by transposition of the letters Θοργαμά, Θεργαμά Θυργαμά, and so also some Hebrew copies תרגמה), as the founder of their nation, and they call themselves the house of Torgom. See J. D. Michaëlis Spicileg. Georg., t. i., p. 67-78.
