אָשֵׁר comp. pr.n. אָשֵׁר).
(1) to be straight, right, i.q. יָשַׁר especially used of a straight way, hence also of what is upright, erect, whence comes the signification of firmness and strength, in the Talmud.
(2) to go straight on, and generally to go, Proverbs 9:6.
(3) to be successful, to prosper, to be fortunate, compare the kindred roots יָשַׁר No. 3, כָּשֵׁר and עָשַׁר.
Piel אִשֵּׁר
(1) to guide, or lead straight, Proverbs 23:19; Isaiah 1:17, אַשְּׁרוּ חָמוֹץ “lead the oppressor right,” into the right way, (unless, comparing Pual No. 2, we render with the ancient versions, ῥύσασθε ἀδικούμενον. Vulg. subvenite oppresso, pr. make the oppressed happy), and generally to lead, Isaiah 3:12, 9:15.
(2) intrans. to go on, Proverbs 4:14.
(3) to pronounce happy, or fortunate, Genesis 30:13 Ps: 72:17 Proverbs 31:28; Song of Solomon 6:9; Job 29:11.
Pual אֻשַּׁר and אוּשַּׁר
(1) to be led, Isaiah 9:15.
(2) to be made fortunate, Psalms 41:3; Proverbs 3:18.

אָשֵׁר (“fortunate,” “happy,” compare Genesis 20:13), [Asher], pr.n.
(1) of a son of Jacob and his concubine Zilpah (Genesis 30:13, 35:26 ), ancestor of the tribe of the same name (Numbers 1:40, 41 ), whose boundaries are described as on the northern border of the holy land, -Josh. 19:2431. The Gentile noun is אֲשֵׁרִי Judges 1:32.
(2) a town to the east of Shechem, Joshua 17:17.
