I. שֶׁ֫מֶר proper name, masculine (properly clan-name, compare Sta ZAW v (1885). 166f., compare Sabean שמר Os13, but Northern Aramaic DHM ZMG xxxvii (1885), 14 SabDenkm30); — Σεμ(μ)ηρ, etc.:

שֶׁמֶר only pl. שְׁמָרִים m. dregs (of wine), so called because, when wine is kept on the lees, its strength and colour are preserved. קָפָא עַל שְׁמָרָיו, שָׁקַט Jeremiah 48:11; Zephaniah 1:12, to be settled on one’s lees, to lead a quiet and tranquil life; a metaphor taken from wine, Isaiah 25:6, שְׁמָרִים מְזֻקָּקִים “lees racked off,” i.e. old and most excellent wine afterwards purified from the lees.
