 קָאַת, קָאָת noun [feminine] a bird, usually pelican (compare ᵐ5 Leviticus , Deuteronomy , Psalm , ᵑ9 Psalm (derived by Thes from [קוא], קיא (see Kö ii. 1,173, and, on ת, Ges§ 80g), as throwing up food from its crop for its young); but sea-fowl improbable in Psalm , Isaiah; Late Hebrew קָאָת, ᵑ7קָאתָא id.); — absolute הַקָּאָת Leviticus 11:18 = Deuteronomy 14:17, as unclean; קָאַת (van d. H. Gi; Baer קָאָת) Isaiah 34:11; Zephaniah 2:14, as inhabiting ruins; construct קְאַת מִדְכָּר Psalm 102:7, simile of loneliness.

קָאַת with the art. הַקָּאָת Leviticus 11:18; Deuteronomy 14:17 const. st. קְאַת f. a bird found in marshes (Levit. and Deut. locc. citt.) and inhabiting deserts, Isaiah 34:11; Zephaniah 2:14; Psalms 102:7 according to several old translators, the pelican; Aram. and Arab. קָקָא, ܩܳܩܐܳ, قيق, قوق, prob. so called from its vomiting, as this very voracious bird is accustomed to vomit sea-shells and other things which it has swallowed. [So in Thesaur. from קוֹא.]
