צָפוֹן comm. (f., Isaiah 43:6; Song of Solomon 4:16).
(1) the north, the north quarter (prop. hidden, obscure, inasmuch as the ancients regarded the north as obscure and dark; πρὸς ζόφον, Hom. Od. ix. 25, seqq.; x. 190, seqq., the south, on the contrary, as clear, and lighted by the sun; see דָּרוֹם ), Numbers 34:7. אֶרֶץ צָפוֹן the north land (Babylonia), Zechariah 2:10 Jerem. 16:15 compare Jeremiah 6:22. Poet. also used for the north wind (רוּחַ צָפוֹן), Song of Solomon 4:16 and for the northern heavens, which is almost the same as for the heaven generally, as the greater part of the southern hemisphere is hidden, Job 26:7. מִצְּפוֹן לְ northward of any place, Joshua 8:11, 13 Joshua 8:13 and without לְ Joshua 11:2. With ־ָה parag. צָפוֹנַה northward, Genesis 13:14 also a region situated towards the north, as מַמְלְכוֹת צָפוֹנָה the kingdoms of the north, Jerem. 1:15 and with prep. אֶל־הַצָּפוֹנָה Ezekiel 8:14 לַצָּפוֹנָה 1 Chronicles 26:17, towards the north. מִצָּפוֹנָה from the north quarter, Joshua 15:10 מִצּפוֹנָה לְ from the north of any place, Judges 21:19 מִפְּנֵי צָפוֹנָה from the north, Jeremiah 1:13. Compare נֶגְבָּה.
