Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָע emphat. state אָעָא; Ch. wood, Ezra 5:8, 6:4, 11 Ezra 6:11; Daniel 5:4 softened from the Heb. עֵץ, ע being changed into א, and ץ into ע; see under the letters א, ע, and צ.

I. אַף conj.

(1) signifying addition, especially of something greater, prop. even, besides, Germ. gar, fogar, the etymology of which has also a common notion. It is (as also shewn by the Ch. אֲפִי Genesis 27:33, Targ. of Jon.) from the root אָפָה, and like the cognate אֵפוֹ, אֵפוֹא, properly denotes something cooked, well done, ready; hence, quite, wholly, Germ. gar, as to the origin of which compare Adelung, Lex. ii. 411; and so that it makes the sense progressive, fogar, vollends, yet more, even (אֵפוּ by a somewhat different turn of signification is ganz und gar, wholly, altogether). To this answers the Syr. ܐܳܦ, Ch. אַף; hence is abbreviated the Arabic ف. Nearly synonymous is גַּם, which however in prose, and in earlier phraseology, is more frequent, while אַף belongs to more poetic and later [?] language. Job 15:4, אַף־אַתָּה תָּפֵר יִרְאָה “thou even makest void the fear (of God),” du zerftörft gar alle Gottesfurcht; Job 14:3, 34:12. With an interrogative particle prefixed הַאַף is it even? (willft du gar? willft du etwa gar?) Job 34:16, 40:8 Amo 2:1-16:l1. Followed by וְאִם. Repeated before a pronoun for the sake of emphasis; Proverbs 22:29, הוֹדַעְתִּיךָ אַף אַתָּה “I make known to thee, even to thee.” Hence nedum, more fully אַף כִי, see below; Job 4:18, 19 Job 4:19, אַף כִּי nedum quum, nedum si, much less if (und nun gar wenn); Job 9:14, אַף כִּי אָנֹכִי אֶעֱנֶנּוּ “how much less if I should answer him?” Job 35:14; Ezekiel 15:5.

(2) simply signifying addition, also, Leviticus 26:16, 28 Leviticus 26:28; 2 Samuel 20:14; Psalms 93:1, 108:2 Job 32:10, etc. There often occurs וְאַף “and also,” Leviticus 26:39; Deuteronomy 15:17 once even וְאַף־גָּם (as in Lat. etiam quoque), Leviticus 26:44. Twice or three times repeated, Isaiah 40:24, 41:26. Often put poetically, and with emphasis for the more common and; comp. Arab. فَ. Isaiah 48:12, 13 Isaiah 48:13, “and I (am) the last, and my hand hath founded the earth;” Isaiah 26:8, 33:2 41:10.

(3) by ellipsis of the conditional particle, i.q. אַף אִם even if; Job 19:4, וְאַף־אָמְנָם שָׁגִיתִי “even if indeed I have erred” (Syr. ܐܳܦ ܐܶܢ and contr. ܐܳܦܶܢ. Also even though, when yet (da doch); Psalms 44:10, “we praise God all the day, אַף זָנַחְתָּ וַתַּבְלִימֵנוּ although thou hast cast us off, and put us to shame;” Psalms 68:17.
