 I. עָר proper name, of a location in Moab, south of Arnon (Ηρ Numbers 21:15, elsewhere chiefly Αροηρ); — ׳ע Numbers 21:15; Deuteronomy 2:9,18,29; עָר מוֺאָד Numbers 21:28; Isaiah 15:1; — usually interpreted as capital city (עָר = עִיר) of Moab (DHM ZMG xxxvii (1883), 398 compare Sabean ער fortified height, compare Mordtm Him. Inschr. 29 HalÉt. Sab. 159 so Arabic , dialect of Yemen); Buhl Geogr.269f. thinks name of district South of Arnon.

עָר m.

(1) i.q. עִיר a city, which see (hence pl. עָרִים). In sing. עָר Numbers 21:15; Deuteronomy 2:9, and fully עָר־מֹואָב (city of Moab), Numbers 21:28; Isaiah 15:1, pr.n. of the metropolis of Moab, situated on the southern shore of Arnon, Gr. Ἀρεόπολις (which those who did not know the true origin, rendered city of Mars); Abulfeda ماب and الربة, now called Rabba. See Relandi Palæstina, p. 577; Burckhardt’s Reise nach Syrien, p. 640.

(2) an enemy, see the root עִיר No. 2, 1 Samuel 28:16. Plur. Psalms 9:7, 139:20.
