 II. עֶגְלָה proper name, feminine wife of David (on sense heifer compare לֵאָה, רָחֵל; see also Gray Prop. N. 92, No.27); — 2 Samuel 3:5 (ᵐ5 Αιγαλ, A Αιγας, ᵐ5 L Αγλα) = 1 Chronicles 3:3 (ᵐ5 Αλα, A Αγλα, ᵐ5 L Εγλα).

עֶגְלָה f.

(1)  a calf, prop. one of the first year, Levit. 9:3 Micah 6:6 (comp. Maimonid. de Sacrif. i. § 14); but it is also very often

(2) a bullock, steer, heifer; used of a heifer broken in to work, Hosea 10:11 giving milk, Isaiah 7:21 yoked to the plough, Judges 14:18 of three years’ old, Genesis 15:9. And such a heifer (prop. one of the third year) not broken in, unaccustomed to the yoke (comp. Hosea 10:11; Jeremiah 31:18 Plin. viii. 4, 5), was rightly understood by the LXX., Vulg., Targ., in the words עֶגְלַת שְׁלִשִׁיָּה Isaiah 15:5; Jeremiah 48:34. Metaph. עֶגְלֵי עַמִּים bullocks of the peoples, used for leaders of the peoples, Psalms 68:31 compare עַתּוּד. (Arab. عِجْلُ Syr. ܥܶܓܠܳ, ܥܓܶܠܬܐܳ id. Eth. እደል፡ a calf, a whelp, and even an infant; see Bochart, Hieroz. i. page 273, seqq.
