Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition
נֶקֶב m.
(1) a socket for setting a gem, pala gemmarum (as rightly rendered by Jerome), so called from its hollowness, Ezekiel 28:13. Compare תֹּף. Others understand it to be a pipe, from the root נָקַב to bore through, like חָלִיל from the root חָלַל, but this is not suitable to the context.
(2) a cavern, whence with the art. הַנֶּקֶב [Nekeb], pr.n. of a town in the tribe of Naphtali, Joshua 19:33.
