Niph`alינּוֺן Qr Psalm 72:17 let his name have increase (or, if Niph`al, be propagated, spread); but dubious, Vrss perhaps יִכּוֺן be established, endure.
נוּן Niphal (according to קרי), or Hiphil (according to כתיב), to sprout, to put forth, Psalms 72:17, לִפְנֵי־שֶׁמֶשׁ יִנּוֹן שְׁמוֹ “as long as the sun remains, his name shall flourish.” Hence נִין progeny, and probab, מָנוֹן; also נוּנָא Syr. and Ch., a fish, so called from its being so prolific; (compare דָּנ).
נוּן (“fish,” see the preceding) [Nun], pr.n of the father of Joshua the leader of Israel, Exodus 33:11; Numbers 11:28, and very often in the book of Joshua. The LXX. write this name Ναυή, an evident error of very ancient copyists (NAYH for NAYN): as it is written in some copies Ναβή and Ναβί (see Holmes.) it may be gathered that more recent copyists took Ναυή to be put by itacism for the Hebrew נביא. Once נוֹן [Non] 1 Chronicles 7:27.
