מָשָׁל m. Arab. مَشَلُ, Syr. ܡܰܬܠܳ [Ch. מַתְלָא]

(1) similitude, parable, Ezekiel 17:2, 24:3.

(2) sentence, opinion, γνώμη, sententious saying, (such as consists in the ingenious comparison of two things or opinions, compare Proverbs 26:1, Proverbs 26:2, Proverbs 26:3, Proverbs 26:6, Proverbs 26:7, Proverbs 26:8, Proverbs 26:9, 11 Proverbs 26:11, 14 Proverbs 26:14, 17 Proverbs 26:17, chap. 25, seq.), Proverbs 1:1, 10:1 25:1 26:7, Proverbs 26:9; Ecclesiastes 12:9; Job 13:12; 1 Kings 5:12. Sentences of this kind often pass into proverbs (1 Samuel 24:13); hence מָשָׁל is

(3) a proverb, παροιμία, e.g. 1 Samuel 10:12; Ezekiel 12:2, Ezekiel 12:3, 12:22, 23 Ezekiel 12:23(compare παραβολή, Lu. 4:13 ).

(4) generally a song, poem, the particular verses of which (by what are called the laws of parallelism) commonly consist of two hemistichs of similar argument and form; specially used of a prophecy, Numbers 23:7, 18 Numbers 23:18 of a discourse or a didactic poem, Job 27:1, 29:1 Psalms 49:5, 78:2 often used of a derisive poem, Isaiah 14:4; Micah 2:4; Habakkuk 2:6. הָיָה לְמָשָׁל וְלִשְׁנִינָה to become a by-word, Deuteronomy 28:37; 1 Kings 9:7.
