Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מַשָּׁא m. (from the root נָשָׁא).

(1)  usury, Nehemiah 5:7.

(2) a debt, i.q. מַשָּׁאָה. Nehemiah 10:32, מַשָּׁא כָל־יָד “the debts of every hand,” i.e. all debts, perhaps so called from the debtor’s promising, by giving his right hand, to pay back the borrowed money. Other MSS. and editions read מַשָּׂא the burden of every hand, which is less suitable.
