(1) strife, contention (from the root דִּין see Niphal), pl. מִדְיָנִים Proverbs 18:18, 19:13, and elsewhere in קרי, where כתיב has מִדְוָנִים. See מָדוֹן.
(2) [Midian], pr.n. of an Arabian nation, descended from Abraham (Genesis 25:2), whose territory lay from the eastern shore of the Ælanitic gulf (where the Arabian geographers place the city مَدُيَن), as far as the land of Moab, and appears to have extended to Mount Sinai, Exodus 3:1, 18:5 Num 31:1-54 -Jud. 68. In some passages the Midianites seem nearly identified with the Ishmaelites, Genesis 37:25, compare 36 Genesis 37:36; Judges 7:12, compare 8:22, 24 Judges 8:24, from whom, however, in other places, they are distinguished, Genesis 25:2, Genesis 25:4, -1218.-בִּכְרֵי מִדְיָן the dromedaries of Midian, Isaiah 60:6 יוֹם מִדְיָן the day of Midian, Isaiah 9:3, i.e. the victory gained over the Midianites (compare Jud. chap.,.)-The Gentile noun is מִדְיָנִי a Midianite, Numbers 10:29 pl. ־ִים Genesis 37:28 f. ־ִית Numbers 25:15.
