יִשָּׂשׂכָר [Issachar], pr. name of the fifth son of Jacob by Leah, Genesis 30:18 whose descendants (בני יששכר) dwelt in the region near the sea of Galilee, -Josh. 19:1723.-This name, as it now stands in the editions (like יְהֹוָה, יְרוּשָׁלַםִ, etc., see Simonis, Analys. Lect. Masoreth. in Pref.), takes the vowels belonging to a continual קרי, יִשָּׂכָר (bought with wages or price, see Genesis 30:16). The more full reading in כתיב may be read in two ways, either יֵשׁ שָׂכָר he is wages, or יִשָּׂשָׂכָר (for יִשָּׂא שָׂכָר) he brings wages, er bringt den Lohn.
