Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

זֶרֶת f. a span, Exodus 28:16, 39:9 1 Samuel 17:4. (Aram. ܙܰܪܬܰ, ܙܰܪܬܐܳ, זַרְתָּא id.), from the root זָרָה to spread out; whence זֵר (for זֵרֶה); f. זֶרֶת, like קֶרֶת from קָרָה, כֶּסֶת from כָּסָה. [“Also according to the Rabbins זֶרֶת is the little finger, for זְעֶרֶת, and hence they derive the meaning of a span, as being terminated by the little finger.” Ges. add.]
