The e represents one who is looking and pointing at a great sight. Combined these mean "a back and forth looking". Birds of prey fly around in a circle in search of their prey and dive down on it when seen.

 [דָּאָה] verb fly swiftly, dart through the air (compare perhaps Arabic run vehemently (of camel)) —

Qal Imperfect יִדְאֶה Deuteronomy 28:49 2t.; וַיֵּ֫דֶא Psalm 18:11(> "" 2 Samuel 22:11 וַיֵּרָא); fly swiftly, dart, of eagle Deuteronomy 28:49, in simile of swift army; of Chaldaeans camp. with eagle, in judgment against Moab & Edom Jeremiah 48:40; Jeremiah 49:22 (in both "" פרשׂ כנפיו); of ׳י in theoph. Psalm 18:11 (compare 2 Samuel 22:11) וַיֵּדֶא עלכֿנפי רוח ("" וַיִּרְכַּב עַלכְּֿרוּב וַיָּעֹף).

דָּאָה fut. יִדְאֶה apoc. יֵדֶא Psal. 18:11, to fly; used of the rapid flight of birds of prey, Deuteronomy 28:49; Jeremiah 48:40, 49:22 of God, Psalms 18:11, וַיֵדֶא עַל־כַּנְפֵי דוּחַ “and he flew upon the wings of the wind.” (For 2 Kings 17:21 see נָדָא.) Hence דַּיָּה and

דָּאָה f. only found in Levit. 11:14 (as in the parallel place, Deuteronomy 14:13 there is דָאָה, by mistake of transcribers); some bird of prey which flies rapidly. LXX. γύψ. Vulg. milvus. Comp. Bochart, Hieroz. t. ii. p. 191.
