גְּדֵרָה f. const. גְּדֶרֶת pl. const. גִּדְרוֹת, with suff. גְּדֵרֹתָיו Psalms 89:41 (with Tzere impure comp. جَدِيَرةُ).
(1) the wall of a city, Ps. loc. cit.; more frequently the fence of a vineyard, Jeremiah 49:3; Nahum 3:17. It differs from a living hedge (מְשׂוּבָה), Isaiah 5:5.
(2) a place fortified with a wall, and i.q. Arab. جَدِيَرةُ a fold for flocks, i.e. a stall erected in the fields, open above, walled all around, fully צאֹן גִּדְרוֹת Numbers 32:16, 24 Numbers 32:24, 36 Numbers 32:36. As to the thing, compare Hom. Od. ix. 185. Hence with art. הַגְּדֵרָה [Gederah], pr.n. of a town in the plain country of the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:36, perhaps the same as is elsewhere called בֵּית גָּדֵר. [“Comp. Pun. גדד i.e. Gades in Spain, see Monumm. Phœn. p. 304, seq.; also Γαδαρὰ a city of Peræa, Γαδαρηνὸς, Matthew 8:28.”] Gent. n. is גְּדֵרָתִי 1 Chronicles 12:4.
