(1) a hill, 2 Samuel 2:25; Isaiah 40:12, 41:15 Song of Solomon 2:8, etc.; גִּבְעֹת עוֹלָם the ancient hills, the same from the creation of the world to this day, Gen, 49:26 Job 15:7, לִפְנֵי גְבָעוֹת חוֹלַלְתָּ “wast thou born before the hills?” Proverbs 8:25 גִּבְעַת יְהֹוָה “the hill of Jehovah,” Zion, Ezekiel 34:26 compare Isaiah 31:4. Many of the hills of Palestine were designated by proper names (אַמָּה, גָּרֵב, חֲכִילָה), in other places the name of hill is applied
(2) To a town situated on a hill (compare dunum in the ancient cities of Germany, Gaul, and Britain, which in Celtic signifies a hill [rather a fortress], Augustodunum, Cæsarodunum, Lugdunum, etc.), [Gibeah, the hill], as
(a) גִּבְעַת בִּנְיָמִין 1 Samuel 13:15 בִנְיָמִין ג׳ בְּנֵי 2 Samuel 23:29, “Gibeah of the Benjamites;” also גִּבְעַת שָׁאוּל 1 Samuel 11:4 גִּבְעַת הָאֱלֹהִים 1 Samuel 10:5 compare 10 1 Samuel 10:10, κατʼ ἐξοχὴν הַגִּבְעָה Hosea 5:8, 9:9 10:9 and גִּבְעָה 1 Samuel 10:26, etc., a town of the Benjamites where Saul was born, infamous for an outrage of the inhabitants (Judges 19:12, seq.; 20:4, seq.), but equally with Bethel reckoned among the ancient sanctuaries of Palestine [???] (1 Samuel 10:5, 1 Samuel 10:6).
