Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בַּעֲלָה [root בַּעַל], f.

(1)  mistress; בַּעֲלַת הַבַּיִת 1 Kings 17:17. Metaph. possessed of, endued with any thing; בַּעֲלַת־אוֹב having a familiar spirit (see אוֹב ); בַּעֲלַת כְּשָׁפִים “a sorceress,” Nahum 3:4.

(2) collect, civitas i.q. בְּעָלִים cives (see בַּעַל No. 3 ), like בַּת daughter, for בָּנִים. I thus explain [Baalah], the pr.n. of two cities, of which one

(a) was situated in the northern part of the tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:9; 1 Chronicles 13:6), called also בַּעֲלֵי יְהוּדָה (“inhabitants of Judah,” see בַּעַל No. 6 letter ), קִרְיַת יְעָרִים (which see) and קִרְיַת־בַּעַל; and it appears to have given its name to Mount Baalah (Joshua 15:11) in the same region, but situated nearer to the sea.

(b) another, situated in the southern part of the same tribe, Joshua 15:29 and it appears to be the same which is elsewhere called בָּלָה Joshua 19:3, and בִּלְהָה 1 Chronicles 4:29, and is attributed to the Simeonites; comp. בַּעַל No. 6, a.
