The word is very frequent in the ostraca for the ";assistants"; of the πράκτορες or ";tax-gatherers,"; see Wilcken Ostr. i. p. 618, and for a similar use in the papyri the editors’ note to P Fay 34.3 (A.D. 161) βοηθοῖς γεωργῶν κώμης Πολυδευκείας , where they translate ";assistants in connexion with taxes upon cultivators at the village of Polydeucia."; For a description of the Praefect as ὁ τοῦ νομοῦ βοηθός , ";helper of the district,"; see P Giss I. 46.11 (time of Hadrian) ἀξιοῦμέν σε τὸν τοῦ νομοῦ βοηθὸν διακοῦσαι ἡμῶν , and cf. P Oxy III. 488.23 (ii/iii A.D.) προσφεύγω σοι τῶι κυρίῳ καὶ πάντων βοηθῷ . For the word in its widest connotation it is sufficient to cite P Oxy IV. 743.20 (B.C. 2) εἰ καὶ π [ρ ]ὸς ἄλλους εἶχον πρᾶγμα , βοηθὸν αὐτοῦ γ [ε ]νέσθαι διὰ ἣν ἔχομ ̣ε ̣(ν ) πρὸς ἑατοὺς φιλίαν , ";for although I (?) have had trouble with others you must assist him for the sake of our friendship"; (Edd.), and P Lond 410.8 (c.
