ἄχρηστος, ἄχρηστον (χρηστός, and this from χράομαι), useless, unprofitable: Philemon 1:11 (here opposed to εὔχρηστος). (In Greek writings from Homer (i. e. Batrach. 70; Theognis) down.) (Synonyms: cf. Tittmann ii. 11f; Trench, § c. 17; Ellicott on Philemon 1:11.)

P Tebt I. 74.36, .70, 75.56 .36 (both ii/B.C.) of ";unproductive"; land. So in CPHerm 7iii. 6 (ii/A.D.), but hiat contextus. It describes a pig in P Flor II. 127.14 (A.D. 256) ἀλλὰ καλὸν πάλιν ἔστω , μὴ ὡς πρώην ̣ καὶ λεπτὸν καὶ ἄχρηστον . Ib. 185.7 (A.D. 254) κατεαγμένα καὶ ἄχρηστα , of panniers, and P Oxy X. 1346 (ii/A.D. ?) ἄχρηστος [γ ]έγωναι (l. γέγονε ), of a garment. Cagnat IV. 293.14 (Pergamon, B.C. 127–6) κατεφθαρμέ [νον . . . καὶ ] . . . γεγονὸς ἄχρησ ̣[τον , of a gymnasium. The moral sense of the word comes out in P Oxy VII. 1070.50 ff. (iii/A.D.) μὴ ἀμελήσῃς μὴ ἄρα ποτὲ θέλῃς μ ̣[ε ]τὰ σ ̣[ο ]ῦ [Ἡρ ]αε ̣ι ̣δ ̣ι ̣ τὴν τήρησιν τῆς ὅλης οἰκίας παραδιδόναι ἀχρήστου ̣ οὔσης αὐτῆς , ";do not neglect this, lest indeed you choose to hand over the keeping of the whole house to Heraïs, who is unworthy"; (Ed.). The resemblance to Philem .11 is obvious. Vettius (p. 62.7) speaks of ἄχρηστα βρέφη .
