Ἄρκος for ἄρκτος, as in Revelation 13:2 (cf. 1 Kingd 17.34) is found in the later inscriptions, as in a Praenestine mosaic, IGSI 1302 (= CIG III. 6131b) (time of Hadrian ?) : cf. ib. 2325, 2328, 2334. The still more contracted ἄρξ occurs in the Silko inscription OGIS 201.17 (vi/A.D.), ἐγὼ γὰρ εἰς κάτω μέρη λέων εἰμί, καὶ εἰς ἄνω μέρη ἄρξ εἰμι : where see Dittenberger’s note. MGr ἀρκούδα ";she-bear,"; as Thumb remarks, owes its origin to this by-form : he also (Handb. p. 320) gives ἄρκος as current in Pontus.
