sufficient, Chrysipp.Tyan. ap. Ath. 3.113b, Matthew 6:34, Herm. ap. Stob. 1.49.44: c. inf., J. BJ 3.6.3; of persons, satisfactory, ἀ. γενοῦ BGU 33.5 (ii/iii A. D.); ἀρκετόν [ἐστι ] it is enough, c. inf., AP 9.749 (Oenom.). Adv. -τῶς Theol.Ar. 38.
ἀρκετός, ἀρκετη, ἀρκετόν (ἀρκέω), sufficient: Matthew 6:34 (where the meaning is, 'Let the present day's trouble suffice for a man, and let him not rashly increase it by anticipating the cares of days to come'; (on the neuter cf. Winers Grammar, § 58, 5; Buttmann, 127 (111))); ἀρκετόν τῷ μαθητῇ (A. V. it is enough for the disciple i. e.) let him be content etc., followed by ἵνα, Matthew 10:25; followed by an infinitive, 1 Peter 4:3. (Chrysippus of Tyana quoted in Athen. 3, 79, p. 113b.)

To the occurrences of this rare word we can now add BGU I. 33.5 (ii/iii A.D.) περὶ τῶν λοιπῶ [ν ] ἔργων σου ἀρκετὸς γ [ε ]νοῦ. We seem to have the adverb in the mutilated conclusion of BGU II. 531ii. 24 (ii/A.D.) ἐὰν δ ̣[ὲ. . . ] ἀρκετος [ἔ ]χηι [ . . . Vettius Valens, p. 304.25, has καὶ ἦν ἀρκετὸν κατὰ τοὺς λοιποὺς ἐᾶσαι. Kaibel Praef. 288c.10 shows ἀ [ρ ]κετὰ τρι [—these three deaths suffice : the god is entreated to be satisfied. (The word is MGr.)
