χειμαρορος (for the more common χειμαρρως (namely, ποταμός), Attic contracted χειμάρρους (which see in Liddell and Scott, at the end), cf. Lob. ad Phryn., p. 234), χειμαρορου, ὁ (χεῖμα winter, and ῤέω, Ροως), from Homer down, the Sept. very often for נַחַל, literally, flowing in winter, a torrent: John 18:1 (where A. V. brook).

";cold"; : neut. ";cold water"; (Mat. 10:42) : cf. the inscr. found in a burial chamber Preisigke 335 δίδοι σοι ] Ὄσιρις τὸ ψυχρὼν ὕδωρ, and so often. The adj. appears alone in the medical Syll 804 ( = .31170).30 ἀναγαργαρίζεσθαι ψυχρῷ πρὸς τὴν σταφυλήν, ";to be used as a gargle with cold water for the uvula,"; and for ψυχροφόρος cf. P Oxy VI. 896.11 (A.D. 316) τῶν δύο ψυχροφόρων, ";the two cold water conductors,"; in connexion with baths.
