water-pot, pitcher, Ar. V. 926, Ec. 678 (anap.), LXX Ecclesiastes 12:6, CIG 2855.10 (Branchidae), John 2:6, etc.; ὑδρίης πέρι δῆρις (cf. ἀμφορίτης) A.R. 4.1767: prov., ἐπὶ θύραις τὴν ὑδρίαν to break the pitcher at the door, 'there's many a slip 'twixt cup and lip', Arist. Rh. 1363a7.

In P Cairo Goodsp 30xlii .8 (A.D. 191–2) ἱσσύπου (l. ὑσσώπου) (τετρώβολον) the editor translates ";caper plant"; : cf. Hebrews 9:19. In John 19:29 ὑσσώπῳ is probably a graphic error for ὑσσῷ, ";a pike,"; ";a javelin"; : see Field Notes, p. 106 ff.
