συμπαθ-έω,
to be sympathetically affected, δοκεῖ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα συμπαθεῖν ἀλλήλοις Arist. Phgn. 808b11; ξ. κεφαλῇ τὰ μέσα Aret. CD 1.4, cf. Gal. 8.33: — Pass., J. AJ 16.11.8.

a. to be affected with the same feeling as another, to sympathize with (Aristotle, Plutarch).
b. in reference to the wretched, to feel for, have compassion on, (Vulg. compatior): τίνι, Hebrews 4:15 (A. V. to be touched with the feeling of); Hebrews 10:34 (Isocrates, p. 64 b.; Dionysius Halicarnassus, Plutarch).

An unusual use of the word is found in P Oxy I. 78.23 (iii/A.D.) ἵν᾽ οὖν μὴ δόξω συνθέσθαι τῇ τοῦ πραγματκοῦ ἀγνοίᾳ, ";to prevent the appearance of my having taken advantage of the tax-collector’s ignorance"; (Edd.).
